About the work
With sides of two metres, “23 | 2022” is among the most expansive works by Juliane Golbs. Over a ground of gold lacquer that shimmers in large, cloud-like zones, thousands of small touches of colour are in motion: blossom shapes in white and lilac, lozenges in cornflower blue, occasional accents of coral. The elements form no objects but currents that run diagonally across the surface and recall the crests of waves. In the lower left corner and along the top edge, finely set rows of the monogram give the moving composition an ornamental hold. The technique of acrylic and gold lacquer on canvas creates a constant exchange of sheen and depth; in raking light the gold passages stand out in relief. The pairing of gold ground and small-scale pattern brings to mind the decorative tradition of Japanese folding screens without quoting it. At 200 × 200 cm the painting has the presence of a wall. The work is in a private collection.
