About the work
"22 | 2022" is a still life that brushes the old genre joyfully against the grain. Pineapple, grapes, apples, a banana, strawberries and a cut melon are painted with strong contours and bright highlights, as known from the lavish still lifes of the seventeenth century. Yet instead of a dark ground, orange, coral red and sand glow here, interspersed with sprayed stencils: JG monograms, anchors and crowns repeat like a fabric pattern. At the centre, inside a red circle, stands the word "MAD", a moment of urban irreverence amid the abundance. Juliane Golbs combines acrylic, acrylic lacquers and gold lacquer and lets paint run down from the upper edge in long streams. Within the Monogram series, the work shows how a personal sign can become the structure of an entire picture. The large format of 200 × 200 cm calls for a spacious room: a dining room, a hall, a place for guests. It feels cheerful and loud, and at the same time carefully composed.
