About the work
A strict grid of white diagonals divides the ground of "42 | 2021" into lozenges and bands. Each field carries its own colour: petrol blue, orange, neon pink, midnight blue, olive, bronze. The order recalls textile patterns or the colour-field studies of modernism. Over this grid, Juliane Golbs lays a vertical cascade of small blossoms in lilac, pale blue and white that falls from the top into the centre of the picture. Golden and bronze drips run down through the flowers and link the two layers. Construction and growth, plan and chance meet here. The work is painted in acrylic, complemented in places by gold leaf that lights up in raking light. Within the Signature Collection, the painting stands for a visual language in which pattern is understood as personal ornament, a kind of coat of arms for the present. In the portrait format of 100 × 140 cm, the work carries strongly across a room and enlivens especially clear, sparingly furnished spaces.
