About the work
This work begins with the frame. A heavy, ornamented gold frame of the kind familiar from picture galleries has been sprayed over with red and blue; the paint spills from the picture onto the wood. On the canvas itself lie diagonal stripes of lilac, light blue and white, overlaid with clouds of blossom in white and pastel blue. Runs of orange, gold and brown trickle vertically downwards. In the lower third, stencilled anchors and JG monograms appear, the heraldic vocabulary of the Signature Collection. In “12 | 2022” Juliane Golbs combines acrylic, acrylic lacquers and gold lacquer on canvas over the frame, questioning the boundary between picture and presentation. The historic frame, really a place of dignity and distance, becomes part of a contemporary, almost urban gesture that recalls street art. At 53 × 69 cm the work is compact and striking at once, a picture for cabinets, bars or a gallery wall where it can enter into dialogue with other formats.
