About the work
The composition of “19 | 2020” arises from an outburst. At the centre, gestural lines in mint, white, orange and midnight blue condense into a whirling core that reaches sideways and scatters splashes of colour across the surface. All around there is ample space: a large ground of apricot and gold lacquer into which fine golden rivulets run from above, and at the lower left a rich block of Prussian blue. This alternation between dense gesture and calm field recalls the painting of Art Informel, in which the act of painting itself becomes the subject. Juliane Golbs translates this attitude into a light, warm palette that takes the weight out of the outburst. In the series Golden Things the work stands for gold as movement: the light does not fall evenly; it drips, runs and gathers. The upright format of 100 × 140 cm is strongest above calm furniture, where the energy of the centre finds enough distance.
