About the work
A wine glass and a sweepingly curved carafe stand before a ground of colour clouds: coral and rosé at the upper left, matt gold lacquer on the right, midnight blue and pale sky blue between them. Both vessels are drawn with a few assured lines in black and white and remain transparent; only the last of the red wine in the glass and a run in the carafe add strong magenta. Golden runs trickle down from the top edge and connect ground and motif. “1756 | 2022” belongs to Golden Things, the series in which Juliane Golbs uses gold as multiplied light. The mixture of acrylic, acrylic lacquers and gold lacquer creates the exchange between glossy contours and soft, blurred areas. The motif stands in the long tradition of the still life with glass and wine, which since the Dutch Baroque has spoken of pleasure and its fleetingness. Here it is turned towards cheerfulness, with gestural freedom instead of old-master smoothness. The work has been sold and remains in the catalogue as a reference for this group of works.
