About the work
A hare in half-profile, with a ruff and a pink garment, stands at the centre of this work. It is not filled in but drawn with loose contour lines, so that the blue-grey sky shows through it. Around it circle white balls of cloud, a ring and Roman numerals as if from a dissolved clock face, along with two bands of square gold fields that divide the picture horizontally like a chessboard. In “25 | 2022” Juliane Golbs takes up the hare, which in her work stands for quickness and alertness; the numerals give the motif a dimension of time. The work belongs to Golden Things: the gold lacquer sits in clear fields and reflects according to the angle of view. Painted in acrylic and gold lacquer on canvas, the composition combines fairy-tale narrative with the open handling of contemporary figuration. Anyone reminded of the costumed animal of book illustration is not mistaken; here, however, it remains enigmatic. A picture for rooms with humour and a sense of ambiguity.
