About the work
A grid of lilac stencilled signs covers the golden ground of "13 | 2020": JG monograms, hares, crowns and anchors, sprayed in regular rows like a wallpaper or fabric pattern. Before this strictly ordered surface, a bouquet bursts open in pink, white, turquoise, mustard yellow and deep midnight blue. The blossoms are set thickly and quickly; towards the bottom they dissolve into long blue trails of paint that run over the pattern. The contrast between controlled ornament and untamed painting forms the core of the picture. Juliane Golbs uses acrylic, gold lacquer and acrylic lacquer, so that the surface appears matt or glossy depending on the angle. In the Monogram series, the personal sign becomes the foundation on which living things first come into their own. One may think of Baroque flower pieces set against brocade, translated into a contemporary, almost graphic language. In the portrait format of 100 × 140 cm, the work is a confident focal point for a salon, dining room or dressing room.
