About the work
A street lined with tall façades, balconies and awnings leads the eye into the depth of "51 | 2019", where the Eiffel Tower stands slender and dark against a golden sky. Juliane Golbs draws the architecture in ink and brush with quick, nervous lines; windows and cornices become rhythms of black, cobalt blue and lavender, with lemon yellow and a green tree glowing between them. The golden ground is both sky and pavement and binds the surfaces into a warm whole. The work stands in the tradition of the city veduta but forgoes precision in favour of the impression of a stroll. For the Golden Things series, it is an early example of how gold captures the mood of an hour – here, the late afternoon light in a great city. Acrylic and ink on canvas keep the spontaneity of the drawing visible. The square format of 100 × 100 cm acted like an open window in a living room. The work is already in private hands.
