About the work
Like a bouquet slipping from the hand, the mass of blossoms in “85 | 2018” sits in the lower part of the upright format. Juliane Golbs builds it from impasto dabs of pink, lilac and white, interspersed with dark green and small accents of yellow and red. Above it opens a ground divided into two chords: on the left a warm, metallic gold, on the right a cool turquoise. From the blossoms, bands of blue and white run downwards, as if the picture were growing and dissolving at the same time. The mixed media of acrylic and other materials on canvas gives the surface relief and sheen. Art-historically the work touches on the flower still life and its vanitas meaning, but turns it towards the present: transience appears not as a warning but as part of beauty. As a work of the series Everlasting Blossoms, it supports the NCL Foundation with part of its proceeds. At 100 × 140 cm the painting is especially strong above a console table or in an entrance hall.
