About the work
At the centre of the landscape-format "24 | 2022", a cloud of blossoms bursts open: dabs of white, pink, yellow, sky blue and lilac condense into a luminous band stretching horizontally across the canvas. Above and at the edges lies a dark midnight blue, below a warm gold ground that reads like sand or evening light; clouds of petrol and dove blue mediate between them. Juliane Golbs paints in acrylic, acrylic lacquers and gold lacquer on canvas, and the lacquers give the blossom dots a fine sheen, as if they were flickering in the light. The work belongs to the Everlasting Blossoms series, which understands floral motifs as resistance to transience – flowers that never wilt. The composition recalls Japanese folding screens with their golden backgrounds and floating plant motifs without quoting them. Part of the proceeds from the series goes to the NCL Foundation. In the 200 × 150 cm format, the work was a generous panorama above a sofa; it is now in a private collection.
