About the work
The Elbphilharmonie with its wave-like roofline appears in "Golden Elbphi" as an image of light and colour. Juliane Golbs paints the glass façade as a grid of blue, grey and white dabs; beneath it, the brick base blurs into pastel green, yellow, pale blue and pink. Fine drips run downwards and let the building melt like a reflection in water; small splashes of neon pink set accents. The warm copper-gold ground envelops the architecture and feels like the sky at sunset over the harbour. In the Golden Things series, this is one of the works in which gold is not material but time of day. The motif stands in the tradition of the harbour and city view, yet is reduced entirely to mood: one recognises the place without seeing details. Acrylic and acrylic lacquer on canvas give the dabs their sheen. At 120 × 160 cm, the painting was a large Hamburg statement; it is now in a private collection.
