About the work
With a yellow, sharply outlined eye, the eagle fixes the viewer. Its head fills the right half of "ein Adler" (An Eagle), crowned by a fan-like crest of feathers in orange, pink and black that recalls a headdress. The plumage is painted in quick white and blue strokes that increasingly dissolve towards the bottom. Behind the bird, sprayed clouds drift past in salmon pink, sky blue and midnight blue, interspersed with broad bands of gold lacquer from which paint runs down in long threads. In this work of acrylic, acrylic lacquers and gold lacquer, Juliane Golbs combines the force of the animal portrait with the lightness of her palette. As an early work in the Golden Things series, the picture shows how gold is not merely background but light that pervades the scene. The eagle, a symbol of strength and foresight since antiquity, appears both wild and vulnerable. In the 100 × 140 cm format, the painting suits a study, an entrance hall or representative rooms.
