About the work
Since the Renaissance tondo, the round format has been an image of perfection in European painting; in "508 | 2024", Juliane Golbs uses it for a heraldic meditation. Over a restless ground of cobalt blue, petrol and turquoise, in which wave crests break into pale bands, lies a strict grid of golden signs: the JG monogram, the crown, the hare, the anchor. Set in rows, they recall a patterned paper or a woven armorial cloth, yet the painting beneath remains free and watery. It is precisely this contrast between order and current that carries the work. For the Signature Collection it is a key piece, because here all the symbols stand side by side as equals and together form a personal emblem – Hanseatic constancy in the anchor, sovereignty in the crown, alertness in the hare. The gold sits slightly raised on the surface and travels with the light. With a diameter of 80 cm, the round painting sets a calm accent above a sideboard or on a narrow wall where a rectangle would feel too severe.
