About the work
On natural linen, whose grey-brown texture remains visible, a cloud of peonies floats. The blossoms are applied thickly in pink, magenta and dusky pink, with short, circling brushstrokes that suggest the volume of the petals. Lime green and mint set accents between them, and areas of gold lacquer shimmer in the background. Towards the bottom the blossoms dissolve into runs that trickle over the linen like rain. “23 | 2019” is one of the early works of the series Everlasting Blossoms. Juliane Golbs understands these floral abstractions as resistance to transience; part of the proceeds from the series goes to the NCL Foundation. Painted in acrylic and gold lacquer on linen canvas, the picture stands in the tradition of the flower piece but shifts attention from the individual plant to blooming and dissolving. The raw linen gives the pink a calm counterpoint. At 80 × 100 cm the work suits living spaces with wood, stone and pale textiles.
