About the work
A single, wide-sweeping brushstroke in rosé, peach and mother-of-pearl turns across the black ground of "26 | 2022", fed by several colours at once that swirl together in the movement. Against this organic gesture, Juliane Golbs sets a stepped pattern of white squares running diagonally through the picture, while gold lacquer drips in fine threads from the upper edge. The work negotiates two kinds of time: the instant of the hand's movement, which Action Painting made its subject, and the cool order of a digital grid. Within the Signature Collection, it is one of the experimental works in which not the monogram but the handwriting itself becomes the coat of arms; the signature at lower right is part of the composition. Acrylic and gold lacquer on black canvas give the picture its depth and sheen. The compact 50 × 60 cm format suits a place where contrast is wanted: beside light architecture, in a studio loft or as a counterpoint in a collection of delicate works.
