About the work
Among the works of Juliane Golbs, “01 | 2021” is a rare figurative scene. A man in a dark suit raises a trumpet to his lips, head and instrument in profile, his body built with a few forceful brushstrokes in midnight blue, grey and white. The artist connects the motif with a personal memory: her father playing the trumpet on New Year’s Eve, a fragment of an unbroken childhood. In painterly terms the figure remains open. Contours dissolve into gestural lines, colour runs down from the top edge in rivulets of red and pink, and behind the musician a warm ground of gold lacquer spreads out, catching the light of the room. Acrylic, acrylic lacquers and gold lacquer on canvas produce a surface on which matt and glossy passages alternate. In the series Golden Things, which understands gold as a carrier of light and memory, this work gives the glow a concrete occasion. The work is currently unavailable.
