About the work
Out of the depth of a black surface, a single broad brush trace in turquoise and mint rises in "27 | 2022". It climbs diagonally from lower right to upper left, twists, pauses and swings on like a line of script whose meaning remains open. Along this path, dabs of rosé, lilac and white blossom, while small orange and golden splashes strike sparks. The proximity to East Asian calligraphy, in which a sign is made in a single breath, is palpable, as is the kinship with Art Informel, which understands the gesture as an expression of the person. Juliane Golbs combines both with the floral language that runs through her work. In the Signature Collection, this piece stands for handwriting as a personal sign, even before a monogram appears. Acrylic on canvas, applied with impasto, lets the trace stand bodily on the surface. The 100 × 120 cm format calls for a bright, calm setting in which the black acts as spatial depth – a minimalist living room, say, or a gallery wall.
