About the work
The curving roofline of the Elbphilharmonie is instantly recognisable, even though Juliane Golbs breaks the building down into lines and fields of colour. The glass façade appears as a grid of black contours filled with light blue, rosé, lime yellow and coral. Above it lies a wide sky of bronze and golden tone that keeps the upper part of the picture calm. Below, the building dissolves into petrol and midnight blue, and runs of paint trickle like reflections into the water of the Elbe. “43 | 2021” belongs to the series Golden Things, in which gold stands for light and warmth. Painted in acrylic and acrylic lacquers on canvas, the work combines the precise observation of a silhouette with the artist’s free, fluid handling. The city view has a firm place in the history of painting; here it becomes a memory of a place rather than its documentation. At 100 × 140 cm, a picture for Hamburg residents, for offices overlooking the Elbe or for anyone who carries the city in their heart.
