About the work
A grid of square gold-leaf fields runs across “37 | 2021” and divides the upright format like a window with glazing bars. Above, below and between them the painting moves freely: cloudy zones in ice blue, dove blue and midnight blue, gestural lines in white and turquoise, occasional accents in pink, and vertical runs falling into the picture from above. Juliane Golbs combines acrylic, gold lacquers and gold leaf on canvas here, three materials that answer light differently. The gold leaf reflects hard and clear, the lacquers more softly, while the acrylic remains matt. So the picture changes with every movement of the viewer. The motif of the golden lattice recalls the order of medieval gold grounds, whose fields here no longer frame anything sacred but an open, atmospheric space. Within the series Golden Things, the work is a study of structure and dissolution. At 100 × 140 cm it suits bright, cool rooms with clear architecture.
