About the work
As part of a triptych, "53 | 2021" is conceived with a counterpart in mind and yet holds its own as an independent picture. In the upper third lies a field of gold leaf, softly shimmering, as if light were breaking through clouds. Below, clouds of midnight blue, cobalt, apricot and mint condense, interspersed with hundreds of small blossoms in plum, lilac and white. Vertical drips in gold and dove blue structure the surface and give the portrait format a downward pull, like falling rain. In acrylic and gold leaf on canvas, Juliane Golbs joins the tradition of the gold ground with a gestural abstraction in which floral motifs appear only as rhythm. In the Signature Collection, the triptych panels belong to the works in which the idea of the coat of arms passes into a free architecture of colour. At 100 × 200 cm, the picture needs ceiling height; alone it has a vertical, almost sacred presence, and together with the other two panels it forms a wall of great calm.
