About the work
“55 | 2021” is one part of a three-part ensemble and carries its central motif: a grid of gold-leaf squares laid across the middle of the narrow upright format. Unlike its sister pictures, the palette here remains especially delicate. Above, a soft powder pink that passes into ice blue and turquoise; below, zones of grey, dove blue and midnight blue, crossed by short, gestural lines and runs that fall downwards. In places the grid seems to break open and reveals the layers behind it, like a memory that shows itself only in fragments. Juliane Golbs works in acrylic and gold leaf on canvas; the gold reflects the light of the room and binds the picture to its surroundings. As a work of the Signature Collection, the grid stands for a personal system of signs. At 100 × 200 cm the work holds its own alone, yet unfolds its full meaning in the interplay of the three parts.
