About the work
On raw, grey-beige linen stands a tower of steel latticework, sketched with a few black and white lines. The silhouette brings the Eiffel Tower in Paris to mind, yet it is more skeleton than likeness: struts break off, lines run beyond the edge of the form. Around the tower, areas of colour explode in neon orange, cornflower blue and cream, while at the lower left a black, gestural patch condenses. “45 | 2021” from the Signature Collection shows Juliane Golbs as a draughtswoman with the brush. Painted in acrylic on a linen stretcher, the work deliberately leaves the support visible; the unpainted linen becomes the air in which the construction stands. The combination of architectural sketch and free colour recalls the studio sheet on which observation and feeling still lie side by side. Here it is enlarged to a square format of 100 × 100 cm and gains an urban presence. A picture for rooms with a metropolitan feel, for a study or an entrance hall.
