About the work
In "11 | 2022", a heavy, ornate gold frame belongs to the work itself. Juliane Golbs has painted over it with spray paint in red and pale blue, bringing this emblem of bourgeois display into the present. Within the picture, diagonal bands of lavender, pink and mint fall across a dove-blue ground; densely dabbed white blossoms float above them, while drips of orange, ochre and black run vertically down. At the lower edge, almost veiled, an anchor and monogram appear – the hallmark of the Signature Collection. The work plays with the history of the frame: what once ennobled a painting and separated it from the room becomes part of the composition here, painting and mount interpenetrate. Acrylic, acrylic lacquers and gold lacquer on canvas over frame create a many-layered surface between matt and high gloss. At 48 × 70 cm, the work is a cabinet piece for rooms where old and new meet, such as a period apartment with stucco.
