About the work
A tall ship with delicately drawn rigging lies at the centre, beside it a smaller vessel, a rowing boat and, at the right edge, a harbour crane, merely suggested in lines. The scene is embedded in clouds of turquoise, sky blue and midnight blue, framed by a broad field of golden tone. Gold and white runs pass vertically through the picture and make the water appear as if seen through a veil of rain. “15 | 2021” belongs to Golden Things; here Juliane Golbs uses acrylic and mixed media on canvas to let drawing and painting stand in layers. For a painter living in Hamburg the harbour is a natural subject, yet the motif makes no topographical claim. It is about the light above the water, about the firm forms of ship and crane dissolving into colour. The combination of line drawing and fluid paint recalls the washed veduta, translated into a large format. At 100 × 140 cm, a picture for rooms seeking a connection to the harbour.
